Waffle Cone Cornucopia Tutorial

They really don’t cost all that much to put together either.
I first got this idea from a few pictures floating around Pinterest {so it is not original with me}, but the links never took me to a comprehensive tutorial. Do a little of this, then a little of that…and hopefully it comes out OK. Unfortunately, an extra trip to the store and 4 completely destroyed cones later, I finally figured out what not to do!
The result is my own version of these adorable Waffle Cone Cornucopia Favors. Trust me, your guests love them!
Supplies Needed:
- Waffle cones {from experience: do NOT buy sugar cones!}
- Steamer {or a makeshift one}
- Wire racks
- Saran wrap
- Fall candy
- Ribbon
- Scissors or paper trimmer
- Hole punch
- Thanksgiving printables
The Project:
Step 1: If you have a steamer, set it on top of a pot with water and bring to a boil on the stove. If you don’t have a steamer {like me!}, create a makeshift one with a deep pot and colander. Only fill the pot with approximately 2 inches of water and make sure the colander rises high enough above the water line.
Step 2: Take one waffle cone at a time and place it in the steamer after the water has come to rolling boil. Don’t throw away the cone wrappers though — we’ll use those in a minute!
Step 3: Place a cover over your steamer so that precious steam doesn’t escape, and leave on for about 2 minutes. If you don’t use a cover, it will take about 4-5 minutes per cone. After your 2 minutes are up, the cone will be flat and almost peeling apart. Scoop out with a spatula and lay on a wire rack. The cone will be very hot, so be careful not to burn yourself!
Step 4: Once you transfer the cone to the rack, very quickly open the top and stick one of your cone wrappers inside to help the cone keep it’s shape. Roll up the tip into a cornucopia tail and hold or a few seconds until it starts to stiffen up. I repeat: You must work quickly!
Step 5: Let the cones cool for at least 30 minutes, then fill with yummy candy. I chose candy corn and autumn colored M&M’s.
Step 6: Carefully wrap each cone in Saran wrap so the candies won’t fall out. You don’t want too much wrap, but you also don’t want too little. Rip off about a 6″ wide piece, then set cornucopia on top. Fold over top, then bottom, then fold the sides under the cone.
Step 7: Finish off your favors with ribbon and cute Thanksgiving printable tags. Cut out with a paper trimmer, then punch a hole in the top corner and string with ribbon. If you’d like, you can write each guest’s name on the back so they know exactly where they’ll be sitting for dinner!

If you can grab candy from after-Halloween sales you could probably make this tutorial for even less. Although, I think I did get a fairly decent price with a coupon, pus, I had 2 half bags of candy left for Joseph’s snacking!
Are you making anything fun for Thanksgiving this year?
